Waterproofing Membrane For Concrete



The most popular material used to protect concrete foundations, buildings and structures from water intrusion is a waterproofing membrane. Moisture penetration into the concrete, even small amounts, can lead to serious structural damage, rust, corrosion and toxic mold growth.

There are two primary types of waterproofing membranes for concrete- sheet based and liquid applied. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, so it's important to know what kind you need before you choose a membrane for your project.

Sheet based membranes are often used to waterproof concrete foundations or for repairs on existing concrete structures. These membranes come to the job site in rolls that are unfurled, laid and bonded to the substrate with hot tar adhesive. Joints between adjacent membranes are also melted with blowtorches to create waterproof joints.

Liquid based membranes, on the other hand, come in liquid form and are applied with a brush or roller to the surface. This type of membrane is easy to apply and works well for large areas.

Choosing the right membrane is important for preventing leaks, but it's also an investment in the safety and value of your foundation. Make sure you ask about the membrane's absorption rate and thickness, as these are key factors in its effectiveness. Additionally, look for membranes that are able to move with your building's structure. Then, check with the manufacturer or contractor to see if they have any case studies or reviews from satisfied clients.
